Estimated one-rep max (1RM)

Your one-rep max (1RM) is the heaviest weight you can handle for exactly one repetition. It is the common measure of maximum strength — and you can estimate it reliably without ever doing a true max test.

What is 1RM?

Your 1RM is the reference point of your strength: expressed in kilos, it says how heavy you can lift at most in an exercise. Training intensity in strength is often described as a percentage of your 1RM — for example working at 80% for strength, or lighter for technique and volume. That way one number gives you a scale for all your working sets.

Lifting a true maximum is heavy, risky and rarely needed. That is why most athletes work with an estimated 1RM, derived from sets they’re doing anyway. That isn’t only safer, but also steadier: one bad day doesn’t ruin your estimate.

How do you estimate your 1RM?

The estimate uses a simple fact: how many reps you managed with a given weight. The more reps a weight allowed, the further it sat below your maximum; common formulas convert that into a 1RM estimate. If you also add how hard the set felt (RPE or reps in reserve), the estimate becomes more accurate, because then it’s clear whether you had something left.

The estimate is most reliable up to about ten reps; beyond that the formulas diverge more. So use your estimated 1RM as a guideline and trend, not as an exact number.
