Maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max)
VO2max is the maximum amount of oxygen your body can take up and use per minute during hard effort, usually expressed per kilogram of body weight. It is one of the best-known measures of aerobic capacity: the ceiling within which all your endurance performances take place.
What is VO2max?
During effort your body has to deliver oxygen — through lungs, heart and blood — and convert it into energy in the muscles. VO2max is the ceiling of that chain: the point where going harder no longer yields any extra oxygen uptake. A higher ceiling means that at the same pace it feels relatively easier and you have more room for hard efforts.
Even so, VO2max on its own is less predictive than it seems. Two athletes with the same VO2max can differ considerably in race time, because your threshold (what share of that ceiling you can hold for a long time) and your running or pedalling efficiency (how much energy a pace costs) count too. Think of VO2max as the engine size; threshold and efficiency determine how much you get out of it day to day.
How do you find and improve VO2max?
The most accurate is a lab test with breath-gas analysis during a rising effort to exhaustion. In practice, watches and apps estimate your VO2max from the ratio between your pace and your heart rate; that is a usable trend as long as your heart-rate data is clean, but sensitive to heat, stress and measurement noise — so read the direction over weeks, not the single value.
You raise your VO2max mainly with stimuli around and just below that ceiling: intervals in the high zones (for example repeats of a few hard minutes, with recovery in between), carried by a broad base of easy endurance. Because those hard stimuli cost a lot of recovery, scheduling them sparingly and in measured doses works better than stacking them up.
