Recovery window

The recovery window is the period after a hard or long session when replacing energy, protein and fluid supports your recovery most. How important that window is depends above all on when your next hard effort follows.

What is the recovery window?

After a hard session your glycogen supply is drawn down, your fluid balance is disturbed and your muscles are ready for repair. In the hours afterwards your body takes up nutrients efficiently, and topping up quickly can help kick-start recovery. Hence the idea of a "window" in which refuelling pays off extra.

The classic picture of a tight "30 minutes or you miss the boat" window has turned out to be more nuanced, though. For most athletes the total daily intake — enough carbohydrate, enough protein spread across the day, and drinking well — matters more than the exact minute you take your recovery meal.

When does it really count?

Refuelling quickly is mainly relevant if your next hard or long session follows within a few hours to a day — think of a second session on the same day, a multi-day event or a hard training camp. Then prompt refuelling gets you measurably more out of your limited recovery time.

If, on the other hand, you have plenty of time until your next effort, normal meals resolve the window by themselves and you don’t need to rush. So tune your refuelling effort to how tight your recovery is.

How Trimetra personalises this

Trimetra tunes the recovery and fuelling advice after a session to that session’s severity and to when your next load is scheduled, instead of always advising the same thing. If there’s a hard session close behind, the app puts more emphasis on prompt refuelling; if there’s plenty of recovery time, your normal meals and total daily intake weigh more heavily.

Frequently asked questions

Do you have to eat within 30 minutes after exercise?

That classic picture has turned out to be more nuanced: for most athletes the total daily intake — enough carbs, sufficient protein spread over the day, drinking well — matters more than the exact minute of your recovery meal. Hurrying is only needed when your recovery time is tight.

When does fast refuelling after training really matter?

When your next hard or long session already follows within hours to a day — a second workout on the same day, a multi-day event or a training camp. Then prompt refuelling measurably gets more out of your limited recovery time.

What should you eat after a hard workout?

Carbohydrates to replenish your store, protein for muscle recovery and fluid for your balance. If you have plenty of time until your next effort, normal meals take care of it by themselves and there is no need to rush.
